| [Review] [Single] Becky (ベッキー♪#); Kokoro Komete (Normal Edition) (Japan Version) (2009) |
[10 Dec 2009|09:38pm] |
Hi everybody, I'm Kizzy! I'm coming in a little late since I've been in Japan for the past month on vacation. (I'm still here, actually, but I leave on Saturday.) I picked up this single in Akihabara and thought it would be a neat first review. I'm definitely not used to writing music reviews (I've only written reviews for books, movies, drama, etc.), but I hope to get better with time!
Enjoy my first review here at ongoingmelody!

Hey, Victoria, if you don't want the download link, let me know! I only included it because it's on the group's official website, and they don't seek royalties from any of their material, it seems.
Also, I wasn't sure what to put for the language tag, as this has no lyrics. XD

| [Review] (Single) Ayumi Hamasaki; Sunrise / Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ |
[30 Nov 2009|10:29pm] |
|
Hey, everybody! I am Haruka *bow* and I am pleased to make your acquaintance! :D To be honest, I had a hard time deciding what to review for my debut as an OnMel reviewer, but in the end, it came down to my favorite artist ever, Ayumi Hamasaki, and I felt that I should share my sincere thoughts on her most recently released single.
Ayumi Hamasaki; Sunrise / Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ (Single) Release Date: August 12, 2009 Language: Japanese Genre: Pop, Ballad, Electronic Purchase: HMV, CDJapan
01. Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ [PV @ YouTube] 02. Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ [PV @ YouTube] 03. "fairyland-glitter-BLUE BIRD-Greatful days-July 1st" Mega-Mash-Up-Mix [FanVid @ YouTube]
04. Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ (Instrumental) 05. Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ (Instrumental)
Sunrise ~LOVE is ALL~ is the staple positive upbeat summer song, beginning with barely audible vocals, and then Ayu's voice hearkens back to the Memorial address days. Although the verses are upbeat, I can't help but feel that there isn't a lot of spirit and heart in them.Throughout these upbeat verses there are synthesized beats, and then the chorus is barely one notch more exuberant than the verses, as if she isn't putting her whole spirit into the chorus, followed by her male dancers repeating the first line of the chorus. The second chorus is a little more spirited, but still not enough. The bridge is the most exuberant piece of the song. I can actually hear Ayu putting a little bit of heart into her vocals, and then the male dancers begin their round of "Motto ookina ai wo, motto ookina koi de" once more. The final chorus' instrumentals speed up as Ayu sends her vocals into a positive climax. The song ends with a crowd cheering. Ultimately, this song is a combination of Greatful days and independent. Neither of those songs are her better songs, in my opinion, but the latter is a staple crowd interaction song at her concerts, and Sunrise was composed to be a concert song, as far as I can tell. While a cute song, and certainly a smidge different from her usual summer single fare, it still took a long time for me to love it.
Sunset ~LOVE is ALL~ is the summer ballad. Both songs carry the same melody, but have slightly different lyrics and starkly different tempos. Synthesized keyboards, a subtle orchestra, and a soft drum machine (with the occasional support of actual drums) support Ayu's tender vocals in this song. Here Ayu actually sounds sincere and longing. It actually kind of reminds me of Ito Yuna's miss you. Sunset does not compare at all to the vibrant, heart-wrenching beauty of other ballads Ayu has sung (such as Moments, Voyage, and Dearest); it has a subtle beauty to it, a beauty we come to notice over time (and it certainly took time for this song to grow on me!), much like the summer sunsets that end the season, and we long for summer to last forever. I kind of find Sunset boring in comparison to the aforementioned classic ballads, but it is still very pretty, and definitely unusual for a summer ballad.
"fairyland-glitter-BLUE BIRD-Greatful days-July 1st" Mega-Mash-Up-Mix is exactly what it says it is. It is a well-executed mashup of Ayu's previous summer songs. I was a little wary of it at first, but soon ate my words as I listened. The various chorus and verses mesh well together, and make one definitive summer medley. Although this mashup certainly shows the similarities between these songs, it just shows that there's a certain formula to Ayu's summer songs, and it's a formula that works.
Overall Score: B+ It isn't one of Ayu's strongest singles, nor is it her worst single ever. It definitely shows a more subtle side of Ayu. Upon the initial listen, I would've given this single a D, but as I continued to listen to it more and more, I began to love it. It's definitely different, and I am eager to hear what You were... / BALLAD is comprised of if she continues this direction. But just don't get me started on the covers for this single...

Hi. OMG. *spazzes* I'm Shapby, btw, nice to meet y'all. My first review will be on Shimizu Shota's Kimi ga Suki. Gaaaah, I'm so excited. Hope you guys find it interesting. Victoria, I can't add tags, either.
清水 翔太 Shimizu Shota - 君が好き Kimi ga Suki (from the single 君が好き) Release Date: December 9, 2009 Language: Japanese Genre(s): Pop, R&B
I came to know about Shimizu Shota just recently through the album Tribute to m-flo, in which he covered the song let go. (Victoria posted a review on that album a while ago.) I liked how he managed to pull off the song, giving the song a more R&B feel to it—in comparison to the original full-fledged ballad version.
( Kimi ga Suki is his latest single, which will be released on December 9th. )
